Charles Barkley and $1,700 worth of wine and tequila

May 18, 2015 By Roy

All over the news today, “Turner broadcasting wooed Charles Barkley with $1,700 of wine and tequila”. There was a chance Charles Barkley was not going to renew his contract with Turner so Turner Broadcasting System president David Levy and other Turner executives traveled to Scottsdale to visit Barkley in-person, at his home, and convince him to stay.

They brought with them, two magnums of 2009 Bond Estates St Eden Napa Valley Red and two bottles of 1942 Don Julio tequila.

Charles said, “My agent never got involved. That’s how much respect I have for David. David bought two bottles of wine, two bottles of tequila and we killed them. The money at this stage of my life does not matter. At this stage of my life, I’m not concerned about money. I shook David’s hand and said, ‘We got a deal.’ I told my agent, ‘We are not haggling or negotiating. Do the deal.’”

We have stocked the 2009 Bond Estates St. Eden Napa Valley Red and the 1942 Don Julio tequila. We don’t have them in stock at the moment however we can special order them at a very competitive price.

2010 Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon available at Roy’s Liquor in Summerlin

December 7, 2014 By Roy

shafer hillside select 2010 summerlinAs super high quality wines go, you are either going to pay a premium price at a 5 star restaurant, buy a bottle/case at auction or get on a long waiting list at the vineyard. Such is the case with the September 2014 release of the 2010 Shafer Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon which is currently available at Roy’s Liquor in Summerlin, Nevada.

The Shafer Vinyards website states, “We are thrilled to offer 2010 Hillside Select, a 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from our rugged hillside vineyards in Napa Valley’s Stags Leap District. This release offers classic richness, youthful elegance and texture. The wine introduces itself with alluring, perfumy aromatics followed by flavors of blackberry, cassis, black cherry, dark chocolate, smoke, peppery spice and a touch of vanilla. The tannins are ripe and refined, holding out great promise for decades of cellar age.

Truly a “wine of a place,” this Cabernet Sauvignon exemplifies the extraordinary richness and suppleness consistently produced in our little valley within a valley in the heart of Stags Leap District.

Hillside Select is aged a full four years prior to release (three years in Alliers and Tronçais oak barrels and 15 months in the bottle). While enjoyable today, this wine will gain richness and maturity with up to 20 years of careful cellaring.

If you go to the newsletter sign up page at the Shafer Vinyards website, they state you could be on the waiting list for as long as two years to get the opportunity to order a bottle of this wine.

case shafer hillside select 2010 las vegasAt wine.com a bottle recently sold for $379. We have a six bottle case in stock at this time. We may consider breaking the case but would prefer not to. If you have any interest at all, please stop by and see me.

And of course we have access to many hard to get quality wines and can place a special order for you, competitively priced.

We also have gift baskets.

Screaming Eagle Wine in the National Press

November 6, 2014 By Roy

screaming eagle wine summerlin las vegasWe ran across an article regarding a restaurant patron who misunderstood the cost of the wine he was purchasing with dinner. He thought he was paying $37.50 for a bottle of Cabernet at Bobby Flay Steakhouse. When he received his bill, he was shocked to find out the cost of the bottle of wine was $3,750. Of course with the restaurant markup he had purchased a 2011 bottle of Screaming Eagle wine.

Screaming Eagle Winery and Vineyards is a California wine estate producing limited amounts of varietal wine; due to the small quantities produced and high prices commanded, their wines are considered cult wines. The winery is located in Oakville, California, north of the town of Napa in the Napa Valley. The vineyard area extends 48.21 acres (19.51 ha), planted with varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc , and a small amount of Sauvignon blanc. The vineyards are managed by David Abreu Vineyard Management and tended to by vineyard foreman Jorge Delgado and his team. In 2006 34 acres were replanted. The annual production ranges from 400 to 750 cases (between 5,000 and 9,000 750ml bottles). The winemaker is Nick Gislason and Michel Rolland is a consultant.

Trying to buy this wine is another story. You can find the wine at fine dining establishments but you will pay a hefty price. You can find the wine at auctions. You can even get on the official Screaming Eagle Waiting List, however many have been on that waiting list for years.

We have acquired this wine in the past for our high end clients. While we do not have this wine in stock we can get it for you at the best possible price and we do carry other fine wines you won’t find in the larger Las Vegas liquor stores.

Please come by our store in Summerlin to view our inventory or to place your order for a bottle of Screaming Eagle wine.
